Organization - Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department
The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) is a combination career and volunteer department that serves as the umbrella organization for providing fire suppression, emergency medical, technical rescue, fire prevention, water rescue, hazardous materials, arson investigation, and educational services in Fairfax County. Its mission is to “provide the highest quality services to protect the lives, property, and environment of our community.”
The FCFRD comprises the career firefighters and support personnel in Fairfax County and the County-owned facilities and apparatus. The Department is chartered by the County’s Board of Supervisors, which oversees the Department’s budget and appoints the County’s Fire Chief. The Fire Chief is in charge of the operations and administration of the entire fire and rescue system.
As a Fairfax County government agency, the FCFRD owns and operates 24 fire stations, along with fire and rescue apparatus and equipment, training facilities for career and volunteer personnel, and a logistics branch. FRD personnel also staff the 13 volunteer owned and/or operated fire stations, as well as frontline fire and rescue apparatus purchased by the volunteer departments.
The FCFRD is among the nation’s most respected fire and rescue departments, with a superb cadre of highly-skilled career firefighters. The 12 volunteer departments that comprise the Fairfax County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association operate in close partnership with these personnel, providing emergency services under the FCFRD banner. Volunteers in the 12 departments share a unique pride in being an integral part of this world-class fire and rescue system.
